Hearts and minds

Interesting interview with Gordon Brown on Andrew Marr’s show this morning. The part that stuck with me was when Brown spoke about winning hearts and minds in the struggle against Islamo-facism. I’ve blogged before (half-jokingly, but then what’s new there) about turning the propaganda tide, of promoting the liberal democratic agenda over the twisted aims of the Islamists, and Brown used the word ‘propaganda’ himself, likening what’s needed now to the effort against Communism in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. I hope this is something that’s pursued. It has its faults, but our liberal democracy is infinitely preferable to a quasi-fascist theocracy, and the sooner we stop kicking our way of life and start extolling its virtues instead, the better.
